Psychological testing is a set of structured tasks and questions given by a trained professional. It helps measure things like thinking skills, emotions, learning issues, or mental health concerns. The goal is to get clear information about your strengths and challenges.
Testing can help many people, such as those who:
Have trouble focusing or think they might have ADHD.
Struggle in school or suspect a learning disability.
Feel strong anxiety, low mood, or mood swings.
Worry about social development.
Need memory or thinking checks (for example, older adults).
Face legal, work, or guardianship questions about capacity or fitness.
Want help planning next steps with clear feedback.
You can call or email our office and reference testing. We’ll ask a few questions about why you seek testing. Then we schedule testing sessions that fit your time and send a short form to gather background details before your apppointment.
At intake, we collect your history and referral questions. You or the referring person (doctor, school, attorney, employer) tells us the main concerns. This helps us pick the right tests and focus on what matters most.
Testing time varies by the type of evaluation. Some sessions may take a few hours in one visit; others may need multiple visits. We explain the plan up front, so you know how many sessions and roughly how long each will be.
All testing is done in our private office in the Hampton Roads area. We serve Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, and nearby communities. All testing is done in-person, but your feedback session will be done virtually.
For guardianship, competency, or other legal evaluations, we can provide written opinions. If testimony is needed, we discuss details and fees separately. If you anticipate becoming involved in a court case, we expect to be told before the intake session. We do not participate in court matters nor perform psychological testing for custody/civil disputes. We will NOT testify in court matters related to custody or criminal charges. Should we be subpoenaed, the client is required to pay a retainer of $3000 and will be billed our fee of $350 per hour, including preparation, travel, and wait time.
Fees vary by evaluation type. Click here to scroll to that part of the page and see more.
While insurance may cover some portion of the testing cost, it is likely a majority will be paid out-of-pocket. Contact us to speak with our Practice Manager, check your benefits, and determine what your portion of the cost will be.
After testing, we set a follow-up meeting. In that meeting, we explain results in clear, simple words. We share what the findings mean and give practical next steps or recommendations. You leave with a written report you can share with doctors, schools, or others if you choose.
